What If Your Body Isn’t the Problem? Rethinking Confidence, Performance, and Progress with Stephanie Havelka

What If Your Body Isn’t the Problem? Rethinking Confidence, Performance, and Progress with Stephanie Havelka

What if you treated your body like a gift instead of something to fix?

In this powerful and energizing episode, we sit down after practice with Stephanie Havelka, a true water woman whose journey spans competitive swimming, Kona Ironman, outrigger canoe racing around the world, surf ski, and even Olympic Trials kayaking. Alongside her athletic accomplishments, Stephanie is also the founder of Sportkini, a swimwear brand designed specifically for women who move.

Stephanie’s story is not just about performance. It is about mindset, resilience, and learning how to fully embrace the body you are in right now.

A Champion Mindset That Translates Across Sports

Stephanie’s athletic path is anything but linear, yet one thing has remained constant: the mindset she developed through swimming.

She shares how being coachable, staying curious, and embracing the process allowed her to move confidently from one sport to the next. Whether it was paddling across the globe or preparing for Olympic Trials, she approached each new challenge with the same foundation.

That mindset continues to serve her today, both in and out of the water.

The Long Road to Building Sportkini

The idea for Sportkini started when Stephanie was just 14 years old. Frustrated by limited and uninspiring swimwear options, she began sketching designs for suits that were both functional and flattering.

Years later, a chance meeting in Australia with a top swimsuit designer changed everything. That mentorship gave her the tools to bring her vision to life, from understanding construction to selecting high-quality materials that could withstand real athletic use.

She returned to the United States, invested her savings into producing 700 suits, and sold them herself in a single summer. That moment confirmed what she already believed. There was a real need for swimwear designed for athletic women.

Her mission was clear: create suits that stay in place, feel good, and allow women to focus on their sport instead of adjusting their swimsuit.

Body Confidence as a Practice

One of the most meaningful parts of this conversation is Stephanie’s perspective on body confidence.

She challenges the idea that our bodies need to be “fixed” before we can feel comfortable in them. Instead, she encourages women to see their bodies as a reflection of everything they have done and overcome.

Stretch marks, scars, and changes are not flaws. They are part of the story.

Her advice is simple and powerful:

  • Wear what you want

  • Start small if you feel hesitant

  • Shift your focus away from how you look and back to what your body can do

When your mind is off your suit, you can fully return to the sport you love.

Losing 52 Pounds by Changing More Than Diet

Stephanie also shares her experience losing 52 pounds, and her approach might surprise you.

Instead of focusing only on training or nutrition, she began by addressing stress. With an autoimmune condition that was constantly flaring, she realized her body needed a different kind of support.

By lowering stress, shifting her environment, and prioritizing her own well-being, everything began to change. Her body responded, her energy returned, and she was able to enjoy swimming again.

The result? A return to competition and the number one U.S. time in the 55–59 short course meters 100 freestyle.

Training Today and What’s Next

Stephanie is currently swimming four times a week and strength training twice a week. With renewed focus, she is now refining the details that matter most, including starts, turns, and efficiency.

She sees this phase as an opportunity. Not just to improve times, but to continue growing and exploring what is possible.

A Reminder for Every Athlete

This conversation is for anyone who has ever questioned their body, their path, or their potential.

Stephanie’s story is a reminder that confidence is not something you wait for. It is something you practice. Progress does not require perfection. It requires willingness. And your body, exactly as it is today, is already worthy of being used, challenged, and celebrated.
