00:00:02.407 --> 00:00:04.030
Welcome to Champions Mojo.
00:00:04.030 --> 00:00:12.154
Join us for conversations that inspire and empower you as an adult athlete, fitness enthusiast or master swimmer.
00:00:12.154 --> 00:00:22.454
Our goal is to make each episode insightful and inspirational and to discover what it takes to build or keep a life of personal excellence.
00:00:22.454 --> 00:00:27.652
I'm your host, kelly Pallas, and we're here to champion you.
00:00:27.652 --> 00:00:39.164
I am at YMCA Masters Nationals Championships in Orlando, florida, and doing an on-deck interview with Lori Hug.
00:00:39.164 --> 00:00:41.228
Lori's been one of my heroes.
00:00:41.228 --> 00:00:50.810
She's a retired professional triathlete but now an extraordinary coach, coaches a ton of people in Masters and I'm going to let her tell us about that.
00:00:50.810 --> 00:00:53.143
But she's also a great swimmer.
00:00:53.143 --> 00:00:55.649
She just swam the 1650 here at Y Nationals.
00:00:55.649 --> 00:00:59.365
The age group win there Broke 20 for the first time in a while.
00:00:59.365 --> 00:01:02.142
So anyway, lori, welcome to Champions Mojo, thank you, Kelly.
00:01:02.563 --> 00:01:04.367
It's a pleasure doing this with you.
00:01:04.367 --> 00:01:07.105
I haven't seen you in a couple of years and I like racing you as well.
00:01:07.941 --> 00:01:12.748
Yes, I'm always at the top of the age group and you're at the bottom, so we don't get to race a whole lot, which is good for both of us.
00:01:12.748 --> 00:01:15.448
Tell us about what you're doing with your coaching.
00:01:15.448 --> 00:01:17.025
So who are you coaching?
00:01:17.025 --> 00:01:17.789
Where are you coaching?
00:01:17.789 --> 00:01:20.625
And tell us about your coaching to high school.
00:01:20.644 --> 00:01:30.128
I also coach for 1776 in Philadelphia area and we have several pools and so we're like nomads we move around and I coach all levels.
00:01:30.128 --> 00:01:30.948
What is?
00:01:31.028 --> 00:01:32.733
your go-to advice.
00:01:32.733 --> 00:01:41.004
If somebody is newer to swimming, newer to master swimming, how many times a week should they swim and what type of stuff would you have them do?
00:01:41.146 --> 00:01:42.990
I recommend they swim at least three days a week.
00:01:42.990 --> 00:01:51.888
A lot will just do one and I don't think you can really progress much if you're swimming one day a week and I would ease them into it Like if we have a newer swimmer.
00:01:51.888 --> 00:01:54.680
I don't want them to do the same thing the people in the next lane are doing.
00:01:54.680 --> 00:02:00.025
I encourage them, do what you can, stop when you need to and maybe do 50s instead of 100s.
00:02:00.185 --> 00:02:11.913
So if you were now talking to the triathletes because you've been a triathlete, I've been a triathlete certainly not at your level, but I just remember all the times that you've done a ton of biking, you've done a ton of running and you're just exhausted.
00:02:11.913 --> 00:02:18.737
What do you recommend for that triathlete, how many days a week and what distance, to make it a good investment?
00:02:19.038 --> 00:02:21.162
It depends on the distance that they're training for.
00:02:21.162 --> 00:02:26.812
If they're doing an Ironman they've got to put some training in for the swim, but some of it might be a recovery swim.
00:02:26.812 --> 00:02:34.926
If they're putting all that mileage in, then maybe do an easy 2000 and you'll still get the yardage up there a little bit, but it's a recovery swim.
00:02:34.926 --> 00:02:36.784
So for you now.
00:02:36.925 --> 00:02:43.147
You've got this busy schedule as a coach, coaching all these different programs, and you're swimming at a high level.
00:02:43.147 --> 00:02:47.843
Where do you fit in your training and what does that training look like?
00:02:47.864 --> 00:02:49.348
I actually swim every single day.
00:02:49.348 --> 00:02:56.451
I never take a day off, but I take Christmas off and I don't recommend that for everybody and I don't go hard every day.
00:02:56.451 --> 00:02:59.306
But I have a great group of friends that I swim with.
00:02:59.306 --> 00:03:03.566
It's fantastic because after I coach, my friends come and we get in and we swim.
00:03:03.566 --> 00:03:07.724
So there's a group of 13 of us and on any given day someone will be there.
00:03:07.724 --> 00:03:08.425
Some of them won't.
00:03:08.425 --> 00:03:19.685
So Tuesday, thursday and Sundays I'll swim with them, and then Monday and Wednesday I'll do strength training and then I'll go and swim on my own or I'll convince somebody to join me.
00:03:19.685 --> 00:03:28.610
Every Wednesday I was doing butterfly focus, which I've switched that to an IM focus, and then let's see Friday, whenever I can.
00:03:28.610 --> 00:03:30.747
There's people that swim different times during the day.
00:03:30.747 --> 00:03:33.088
So I have all these people that are retired now.
00:03:33.088 --> 00:03:34.906
Before it was like me swimming by myself.
00:03:34.906 --> 00:03:36.250
My friends have all retired.
00:03:36.250 --> 00:03:37.564
They're all former college swimmers.
00:03:37.564 --> 00:03:38.448
It's fantastic.
00:03:39.000 --> 00:03:40.766
Oh, that's a great training group.
00:03:40.766 --> 00:03:42.020
It's like such a gift.
00:03:42.081 --> 00:03:45.125
And that's why it's every day, because I get to see different people each day.
00:03:45.686 --> 00:03:46.947
Yes, that's wonderful.
00:03:46.947 --> 00:03:49.811
Has there been a good comeback story?
00:03:49.811 --> 00:03:51.733
Because we all need a good comeback story.
00:03:51.973 --> 00:03:54.195
I've been doing triathlon since I was 24.
00:03:54.195 --> 00:03:57.248
And when I was, I started getting faster.
00:03:57.248 --> 00:03:58.300
I was like, oh, I think maybe I want to go pro.
00:03:58.300 --> 00:04:06.604
And then at 30, I just started getting really slow and I was like, oh, I guess I'm just getting old.
00:04:06.604 --> 00:04:07.668
And it turns out I was anemic and I didn't know it.
00:04:07.668 --> 00:04:18.968
I just kept getting like weaker and had trouble walking upstairs and it was just so frustrating because I was like I'd be on the track running as hard as I could and I couldn't even do an eight minute mile, whereas I used to race a lot faster than that.
00:04:18.968 --> 00:04:26.507
So I finally just I'm just going to do this socially and I'll have fun with it.
00:04:26.526 --> 00:04:39.336
I went on the pill and it evened out my menstrual cycle and all of a sudden I started getting faster and a friend of mine realized, like I was never diagnosed but I had been chewing ice and that's something called pica or pica, and it's a symptom of anemia, and so I had no idea.
00:04:39.336 --> 00:04:43.166
My dentist has stopped chewing ice because I kept breaking my teeth and I'm like I can't.
00:04:43.166 --> 00:04:51.661
I went on the pill and all of a sudden, like within a year, I started getting faster and more energy and my friend who's immersed was a figure.
00:04:51.661 --> 00:04:53.165
She's like you're not chewing ice anymore.
00:04:53.165 --> 00:04:55.572
I said, no, you are anemic.
00:04:55.572 --> 00:04:56.701
I'm like, oh my God.
00:04:57.101 --> 00:05:00.346
And I just started getting faster and when I was having that problem.
00:05:00.346 --> 00:05:02.309
I still love the sport, so I just changed my focus.
00:05:02.309 --> 00:05:04.752
I'm like I'm just going to have fun and be social with it.
00:05:04.752 --> 00:05:07.336
So when it gets to that point, it doesn't mean you have to give it up.
00:05:07.336 --> 00:05:11.670
So I really appreciate my health now, because you don't know when it's going to happen again.
00:05:11.670 --> 00:05:16.661
You don't know when something's going to happen, but I know that the sport's going to be there, even if I can't be at a high level.
00:05:17.300 --> 00:05:20.283
Yeah, absolutely, Health is the real wealth.
00:05:20.283 --> 00:05:31.569
Tell us about the difference that you saw as a person who might swim a mile in open water, and then you just did a try an open water swim.
00:05:31.569 --> 00:05:33.050
What would you say?
00:05:33.050 --> 00:05:50.555
Some of the similarities, pitfalls, things that you would recommend?
00:05:50.776 --> 00:06:01.911
They're very similar but they're also different because in open water it's more physical, Like you're bumping into people, you need to sight, there's waves, you have all the conditions to deal with and I enjoy that.
00:06:01.911 --> 00:06:04.687
And some people don't enjoy it because it's not the same.
00:06:04.687 --> 00:06:07.805
The pool is just black line back and forth.
00:06:07.805 --> 00:06:12.543
So for an open water swimmer to become more of a pool swimmer, I think it might be a little more boring.
00:06:12.543 --> 00:06:16.723
They're going to have to focus more on their turns and streamlining off the walls.
00:06:17.264 --> 00:06:20.892
I do breathing patterns to keep myself occupied when I'm doing my lengths.
00:06:20.892 --> 00:06:23.305
I do these breathing patterns in open water.
00:06:23.305 --> 00:06:28.168
I'm just racing and I'm trying to stay with someone or I'm trying to bridge a gap.
00:06:28.168 --> 00:06:33.767
And so for open water you're going to need to have some skills that you don't have in the pool.
00:06:33.767 --> 00:06:46.360
But you can practice them in the pool, like pickups in the middle of the swim, because, like you're chasing somebody, if you're open water going into pool, sometimes what I recommend is swimming with your eyes closed and then breathing.
00:06:46.360 --> 00:06:58.093
So if you're actually let me flip this if you're a pool swimmer training for open water, I sometimes recommend having your eyes closed and then, when you turn your head, open your eyes so like you're used to having the dark, because that was one of the things.
00:06:58.093 --> 00:07:09.295
When I first do an open water, I'm like, oh, it's scary, like it's murky and you can't see anything and do some drills like swim a 25 with your eyes closed, just things like that.
00:07:09.480 --> 00:07:12.112
Do you find one to be more painful than the other?
00:07:13.437 --> 00:07:14.160
they're different.
00:07:14.160 --> 00:07:15.302
I don't know.
00:07:15.302 --> 00:07:16.608
That was very painful.
00:07:16.608 --> 00:07:27.870
Right now, I feel like if I'm open water, you don't know what your time is, so you can ease off a little bit maybe, whereas in the pool, if you had a bad swim, like you can see, you're not hitting your splits where.
00:07:27.870 --> 00:07:33.716
That's why I know some people won't do like pool races, because they don't really want to compare themselves to what they were when they were younger.
00:07:33.716 --> 00:07:35.862
Open water gives you a little more freedom.
00:07:35.862 --> 00:07:36.723
Okay, I got the got.
00:07:36.723 --> 00:07:37.625
The sun was in my eyes.
00:07:37.625 --> 00:07:38.487
I can blame it on that.
00:07:38.487 --> 00:07:41.725
Something you have, like more excuses in water, I think.
00:07:41.855 --> 00:07:43.240
The course was different.
00:07:43.240 --> 00:07:44.002
It was longer.
00:07:44.002 --> 00:07:47.483
It's never measured exact, but the pools are definitely measured exactly.
00:07:47.483 --> 00:08:20.341
Nobody's going to yank your foot, at least in the pool, and pull you back, that's true, yes, no-transcript, you got to be in little packs, but I did have an excuse.
00:08:20.362 --> 00:08:25.586
I'm like I felt like I was being hit the whole time and I know Eni Jones who she's a fantastic swimmer.
00:08:25.586 --> 00:08:27.177
She got kicked in the mouth.
00:08:27.177 --> 00:08:30.687
She didn't finish the race, so it's much more physical.
00:08:33.216 --> 00:08:34.561
Want to make a real difference.
00:08:34.561 --> 00:08:40.320

00:08:56.926 --> 00:08:59.210
Forward slash pathways.
00:08:59.210 --> 00:09:07.143
There's nothing worse than being in a heat that's mis-seeded.
00:09:07.143 --> 00:09:12.541
What is like one of the wilder, open water stories that you can share with us?
00:09:12.541 --> 00:09:13.923
Okay, so there?
00:09:13.964 --> 00:09:21.722
was a championship USMAS championship at Fire Island in New York, and the water the day before was 72.
00:09:21.722 --> 00:09:23.221
It had dropped below 64.
00:09:23.221 --> 00:09:27.240
Like one woman measured it at the upper 50s, they said it was 64.
00:09:27.240 --> 00:09:33.801
And you can't wear wetsuits for the championship race and it was choppy and it was crazy.
00:09:33.801 --> 00:09:45.508
So we went in and it was so cold and I got in the lead pack and it was great and swimming, and I know it's three laps, but when you're that cold you lose track of where you are.
00:09:45.508 --> 00:09:49.826
And after two laps like we must be done, we have to be done I feel like I've been swimming forever.
00:09:49.826 --> 00:09:52.378
And then I just lost feeling.
00:09:52.378 --> 00:09:53.198
I was still with this.
00:09:53.399 --> 00:09:57.546
These three guys, the three of us were swimming together and I had the lead and then the last leg.
00:09:57.546 --> 00:10:00.850
I was like, oh wait, but there was a one mile swim, so I know we have another lap.
00:10:00.850 --> 00:10:04.904
And so we just kept going and the water got choppier and I just went.
00:10:04.904 --> 00:10:05.767
I was at a bad place.
00:10:05.767 --> 00:10:08.020
I was like, oh no, I just wanted to quit.
00:10:08.100 --> 00:10:09.023
And then I just, you know what.
00:10:09.023 --> 00:10:13.381
You're doing, something you love feel the warm sun on your back and just enjoy it.
00:10:13.381 --> 00:10:16.349
Don't care about the wind if girls catch you, that's fine, just enjoy it.
00:10:16.349 --> 00:10:16.890
Don't care about the wind.
00:10:16.890 --> 00:10:18.474
If girls catch you, that's fine, just enjoy the swim and the rest of it.
00:10:18.474 --> 00:10:21.760
I was numb, my fingers were cold, like I couldn't feel my fingers or toes.
00:10:21.760 --> 00:10:29.105
The guys dropped me big time and I just enjoyed the rest of the swim, came out and ended up winning by 20 or 30 seconds.
00:10:29.105 --> 00:10:33.057
The younger girls were catching me, but just that I was able to change my attitude made all the difference.
00:10:33.057 --> 00:10:34.778
It change my attitude made all the difference.
00:10:34.778 --> 00:10:38.302
It made the swim go from something horrible to something like I was really proud of.
00:10:39.104 --> 00:10:43.128
Yeah, a mindset shift is so huge in the middle of a of an endurance race.
00:10:43.128 --> 00:10:54.057
For sure, because you can either tank yourself or push yourself forward just in the spirit of like having a coffee conversation here.
00:10:54.057 --> 00:10:55.981
I don't know if you remember this USA Triathlon World Qualifier.
00:10:55.981 --> 00:10:58.405
I don't know how old I was.
00:10:58.405 --> 00:11:02.179
I want to say I was in my 30s and you were probably there at that point.
00:11:02.179 --> 00:11:09.904
I don't know if you were doing pro, but they, it was a World Qualifier in Claremont, florida, and that little lake that they have.
00:11:09.904 --> 00:11:17.500
I had come, I was coaching at the University of Arkansas and I'd flown all the way out to Florida from Arkansas, so it wasn't like I was around the corner.
00:11:17.500 --> 00:11:19.182
Was this 1999?
00:11:19.182 --> 00:11:21.683
I'll tell you the story and you can tell me what you think it was.
00:11:21.783 --> 00:11:24.767
Being swimmers, we need the advantage of that swim.
00:11:24.767 --> 00:11:31.152
We need a minute ahead of people before we get on the bike and usually I had that and you too.
00:11:31.152 --> 00:11:41.855
I heard some rumor that you were like undefeated in the swim for all of your pro races, or many, or you came out at nine out of 10, you were the first swimmer out, but I went up the night before they had the buoys out.
00:11:41.855 --> 00:11:43.339
I was in the triangular course.
00:11:43.339 --> 00:11:44.722
I swam that really easy.
00:11:44.722 --> 00:11:46.916
I'm like, okay, I'm just going to swim the whole swim course.
00:11:46.975 --> 00:11:51.961
And I think I swam it in 22 minutes or something, because at that point I was probably a 17 minute miler.
00:11:51.961 --> 00:11:57.145
So 22 minutes was a nice cruising and I thought, okay, tomorrow I'll come out in 19 or something.
00:11:57.145 --> 00:12:00.129
And so the next morning we all have our watches.
00:12:00.129 --> 00:12:11.283
There had been a windstorm the night before and when I went out to swim I was busy getting my bike ready and getting the whole thing going and I didn't pay that much attention to how the buoys looked.
00:12:11.283 --> 00:12:14.438
But I thought, god, that swim course looks so small.
00:12:14.438 --> 00:12:20.361
Today I came on my watch Of course we all start to watch this I came out of the water in 12 minutes, yep.
00:12:20.643 --> 00:12:21.686
Yep, that was the race.
00:12:21.686 --> 00:12:23.337
That was my breakthrough race.
00:12:23.337 --> 00:12:25.423
Oh, okay, yeah, tell us about it.
00:12:25.423 --> 00:12:26.025
So that's crazy.
00:12:26.025 --> 00:12:29.899
When you said that, I'm like, yeah, I remember being so mad because I saw mad.
00:12:29.899 --> 00:12:38.615
I'm like this is my advantage, just like you said, yeah.
00:12:38.615 --> 00:12:43.184
So I first out of the water and I got on the bike and I went so hard.
00:12:43.184 --> 00:12:56.076
I was like, and in the past, because I was right after I got over my anemia, I had just so this is, I was just starting to get fast again and I'm like I was never the first off the bike at local races, I was the first off the bike in my age group.
00:12:56.076 --> 00:12:56.980
I'm like what the heck?
00:12:56.980 --> 00:12:57.822
The heck is going on.
00:12:57.822 --> 00:13:00.149
I'm never maybe one girl caught.
00:13:00.149 --> 00:13:02.495
No, one girl caught me and she was always way ahead of me.
00:13:02.495 --> 00:13:04.320
And then I caught her on the run.
00:13:04.320 --> 00:13:07.777
So I was like I'm leading this race and was a champion, was a qualifier.
00:13:07.777 --> 00:13:09.562
I'm like what the heck?
00:13:09.562 --> 00:13:11.567
I've never, I don't even lead the local races.
00:13:11.567 --> 00:13:19.899
And then somebody finally caught me on the last 5k.
00:13:20.059 --> 00:13:22.567
I think two, one or two girls caught me, but I was like I took that and I got, I used that as fuel.
00:13:22.567 --> 00:13:26.697
I was so mad that, yeah, and they and Lori Hug was born, the triathlete was born on that race.
00:13:26.697 --> 00:13:28.221
Yeah, I'm so glad to hear that.
00:13:28.221 --> 00:13:35.943
I remember it correctly because I was like, oh my gosh, and back then they only took, I want to say, top three or something.
00:13:35.943 --> 00:13:36.384
It was 10.
00:13:36.384 --> 00:13:37.206
I think it was 10.
00:13:37.206 --> 00:13:43.163
Yeah, now they take a ton, but whatever it was, I missed by one place and five seconds.
00:13:43.302 --> 00:13:44.806
It was something and it was a swim.
00:13:44.806 --> 00:13:45.528
It was a swim.
00:13:45.648 --> 00:13:49.034
It was a swim, but imagine what you would have done on that, I know, with a real swim.
00:13:49.034 --> 00:13:51.403
Or maybe you wouldn't have been as motivated and fired up.
00:14:01.554 --> 00:14:02.255
I don't what the yeah you became.
00:14:02.255 --> 00:14:02.895
You became my championship.
00:14:02.895 --> 00:14:05.499
I think I had gone to Mrs T's in Chicago and I was like 67th in my age group.
00:14:06.601 --> 00:14:10.919
Lori, everyone has that race where they become somebody, but that's cool, that's a memorable one.
00:14:10.919 --> 00:14:12.225
Yeah, that was a memorable one.
00:14:12.225 --> 00:14:21.184
Yeah, I think we could tell a lot of open water stories, just where goggles are kicked off and people are the last time I went to World Championships in Chicago, and that's why I don't go anymore.
00:14:21.720 --> 00:14:28.765
Right before our wave went we were the second to last wave, the women, whatever age group we were and the pontoon broke or something and they held us up.
00:14:28.765 --> 00:14:31.392
We're in our wetsuits, ready to go standing there for 20 minutes.
00:14:31.392 --> 00:14:34.527
And they're like, oh, we're cutting the short down, we're cutting this one down to 700 meters.
00:14:34.527 --> 00:14:37.327
And so I was like are you kidding me?
00:14:37.327 --> 00:14:38.543
And so I was still.
00:14:38.543 --> 00:14:39.788
I came off the bike in second.
00:14:39.788 --> 00:14:41.527
I would have been off the bike so far ahead.
00:14:41.527 --> 00:14:42.120
And then the run.
00:14:42.120 --> 00:14:48.086
Not only that, the run was long by half and the two girls passed me on that last bonus one.
00:14:48.086 --> 00:14:49.807
I was like never again.
00:14:49.807 --> 00:14:50.807
This is world championships.
00:14:50.807 --> 00:14:53.850
They can't even have the right swim, bike and run distances.
00:14:53.850 --> 00:14:54.991
Yeah.
00:14:55.091 --> 00:14:56.972
It's tough, swim is always shorter.
00:14:56.972 --> 00:14:59.014
I always wanted do you remember the balance bar?
00:14:59.014 --> 00:15:03.462
I don't even know if they still have the balance protein bar, but it's called the balance bar.
00:15:03.462 --> 00:15:07.373
I always wanted them to sponsor a triathlon where they did even even amount.
00:15:11.360 --> 00:15:11.822
Yeah, even even amount.
00:15:11.822 --> 00:15:13.947
Yet there used to be one in vermont, the vermont, it was even up or something.
00:15:13.947 --> 00:15:14.109
Not met.
00:15:14.109 --> 00:15:16.115
I went, doug and walker went like I never him.
00:15:16.115 --> 00:15:17.961
He was triathlete of the year a couple years ago.
00:15:17.961 --> 00:15:19.024
It was.
00:15:19.024 --> 00:15:20.908
You had a choice of a long course or short course.
00:15:20.908 --> 00:15:26.331
The long course was three and a half mile swim, 30 to 32 mile bike and then a half marathon.
00:15:26.774 --> 00:15:37.761
I was like it was great, it was equal yeah, it should be equal on time, but then it wouldn't be the hardest race ever, because it was the one course was brutal, it was dirt roads and nothing but hills.
00:15:38.344 --> 00:15:43.666
But I went back three times, I did three times, I loved it and then they discontinued it because they didn't have that many people going up.
00:15:44.047 --> 00:15:46.822
Yeah, Lori, it's been great to spend time with you today.
00:15:46.822 --> 00:15:50.668
Is there anything that I haven't asked you that you think you want to share with people?
00:15:50.668 --> 00:15:51.750
One thing that.
00:15:52.471 --> 00:15:59.408
I don't know if it will keep going on this year or whatever, but I've won a race in triathlon every year since 1991.
00:15:59.408 --> 00:16:00.509
Oh my gosh.
00:16:00.509 --> 00:16:02.693
So I'm trying to keep the streak going.
00:16:02.693 --> 00:16:04.381
I love a streak, I love a streak.
00:16:04.923 --> 00:16:06.505
But yeah, that's my little fun fact.
00:16:06.505 --> 00:16:09.110
Have you picked your triathlon for the summer?
00:16:09.110 --> 00:16:10.773
I have a few picked out.
00:16:10.812 --> 00:16:14.407
So I'm getting into these super sprints so I don't like running.
00:16:14.407 --> 00:16:19.785
So you do maybe a 300 meter swim, maybe a five or six mile bike and a mile run.
00:16:19.785 --> 00:16:20.508
I love it.
00:16:20.508 --> 00:16:21.471
It's so much fun.
00:16:21.471 --> 00:16:23.125
It's 30 minutes and you just go all out.
00:16:23.125 --> 00:16:23.869
It's really fun.
00:16:24.299 --> 00:16:27.744
Now do you have to win your age group or win overall, overall, oh, overall, oh.
00:16:27.744 --> 00:16:29.606
That's a tougher streak to keep going.
