Speaker 2Hello friends, welcome to the champions mojo podcast. I am your host, kelly Palace, and, as usual, i am with my co-host, maria Parker. Hey Maria, hey Kelly, it's great to be with you here today. Yes, and Maria, this is a special edition of champions mojo from the pool deck and we have a Great interview for you today. It's brief, it's short, but it's powerful.
Speaker 3Yeah, and we. I wasn't there, but I was able to listen to the interview and some great takeaways.
Speaker 2Yep, we hope you'll stick around and catch the takeaways. And here we go. I Am on deck with David Quiggan, multiple world record holder here at the YMCA national championships. And, david, i want to tell you that I've had a inspiration moment on deck with madam Ritter and I asked him who inspires him in In swimming and he said David Quiggan. No, that's hard to imagine. Well, it's not hard to imagine because He said when you stood up and went 107 long course, 100 meter free, as a 70 year old, to set the world record, how did that swim feel for you, you know?
Speaker 4really wonder what is?
Speaker 2what do you think the key to your success is with all these world records?
Speaker 4I practiced really hard, i Really get to turn out. Sometimes I just put my head. Then, like the last race I had, I took one quick breath off the turn and I just put my head down, went because the guy was right next and Did you win? Yeah, i'm not supposed to talk to you.
Speaker 2So you're the national champion. How old are you now? 78, 78, so you're in the middle of your age group. You still won a national title here. So you, as a 78 year old, took one breath and a 53.
Speaker 4No, I took a two going out.
Speaker 2Okay, so two on the first length one coming back.
Speaker 4Yeah, right after the turn, and then I just put my head on did you feel like you were okay with those last like 10 strokes?
Speaker 2Yeah, it's just.
Speaker 4Yeah it's just a termination, all right. You know, i just pulled as hard as I could, kept my head down and tried to finish. It's strong. What was your time?
Speaker 227. You on 27, you're 78 years old. That is so fast, okay. So, david, what does the Palm Beach Masters mean to you?
Speaker 4needs the world. I have a one miracle coach in Linda Boster and a lot of good practices and she hires good Coaches to really coach. If you ask them, or just letting them, let you swim. If you just want to swim, an access No, i'm learning.
Speaker 2It's feeling Then a life saving so, at 78, what is just a general week of training for you? I?
Speaker 4Used to go five, six days a week, but at my age now I go in or Or maybe five, sometimes three. But I'm trying to build that.
Speaker 2I kind of got out of Condition three, so three to five days a week, and how much are you swimming in those practices?
Speaker 4It ranges from 2500 to maybe 37 and 100 yards.
Speaker 2Any weight lifting or yoga or anything.
Speaker 4Originally no, when I'm gonna take it up.
Speaker 2Okay especially after this last okay, so we know we're on the last day of the meet. We need to get you on the road. So two last questions, with there being any advice you would give to Up-and-coming master swimmers who want to be world record setters.
Speaker 4I Think you've got to work. You're the coach at some point And you have to do what they say. And then the other thing is you really have to practice hard. I mean, i think And it depends what you're doing I mean a distance swimmer, i Actually swim the thousand and the five hundred and I guess I'm unusual. But if you're gonna swim long distance, get somebody who knows what they're doing.
Speaker 2And the same thing if you're screening, because it's really different well, you are known for having beautiful tech and And what do you do? you attribute that to working with a coach.
Speaker 4Actually I Hate to say it, but I think I've always said because from the beginning, my father told me how to swim Okay, like hearing, and he just kind of took me in the water, kind of push me off the way, told me what to do and help me and push me off and I started swimming and Ever since then I loved it. Everybody said I have a real ice cream, so I just try to keep it.
Speaker 2You're what they call a natural. I think so. Yeah, that's beautiful. Well, okay, the very last question is more of an ethereal, spiritual fun question. What do you feel like, david, when you dive in the water for anything, not just not a race, but any time you hit that log lock?
Speaker 4I don't have much bad on me When I hit the water. usually it's called a whoa.
Speaker 2Whoa, we've had that answer before.
Speaker 4I really love the feel On the dive. On this one I think I hit it clean and I did work on my dolphin kick underwater, i think. Well, i like that All until it gets till I get exhaust.
Speaker 2Well, you don't easily exhaust. Thanks for spending this time and really appreciate it. You're a huge inspiration to me and everybody that watches you swim, so thank you.
Speaker 4By the way, Kelly is a tremendous swimmer and she's one of my idols.
Speaker 2Oh well, love you, babe. All right thanks.

Speaker 1And now the takeaways.
Speaker 2So there it is, words of wisdom from the great Dave Quiggan. And I don't think it's coincidental that Adam Ritter looks up to Dave Quiggan And Dave Quiggan is just like we described Susan Ritter, adam Ritter and Dave Quiggan which is the sweetest, nicest people on the pool deck? Get them on the block and they're steely-eyed competitors. And David Quiggan had just swam as a 78-year-old 27-1 in the 53. I think that was a national record or at least a Y record, but that's just incredible. I mean, if you know how fast that is, it's incredible. But Dave is just so wonderful and has a lot of good perspective And he's also really humble on what he's done. How was your take?
Speaker 3on this. Well, again, he said a lot of things about swimming that I thought just applied to life. He said he practices hard. I got determined. I just put my head down and went I pulled as hard as I could. Those are things. Oh yeah, that's what you do. That's what champion does. They put their head down and they just go. They pull as hard as they can. So I was really inspired by his. And also he swims twice as fast as I do. Just crazy how fast he is and just how inspirational and kind Yeah, It is.
Speaker 2the idea of this is to be inspired and to think of being 78-years-old and being that fast in the pool and that dedicated to the sport and enjoying it. And he's another. as many of these champions said, their swimming community is like their family and they love that, And I also. my real takeaway, too, is he really loves his coach. He really loves Linda and she's done a lot for him. And having a great coach you and I always talk about this that it's important if you have high goals in life to have somebody that's there holding your hand and helping you. And Dave has certainly set a lot of world records and reached a lot of goals, And I know that having a great coach like Linda has helped him.
Speaker 3Yeah, That was. His advice is have a good coach. Whatever you're doing, try to find that, And I thought that was good And I also I loved his last comment was I love a clean dive.
Speaker 2Yes, gosh, i have not mastered the clean dive. You know I have not mastered the clean dive. That's a great. Oh, that's wonderful.
